    First time Head Gasket...ever

    91 E30 M20.
    Cleaned as much as I could with carb cleaner and plastic scrapers. How much more should I try to get cleaned? Tips?IMG_4601.JPGIMG_4603.JPGIMG_4604.JPG

    There can't be any material left on the block. You should not be able to feel anything left on the block. From the pictures I don't think you are there yet. Plastic scrapers alone probably aren't going to do it.

    I myself have always used scotch bright pads and whatever solvent was handy usually brake-clean. Sadly, there isn't secret to doing this other than a lot of elbow grease and if there is I haven't figured it out yet. I think that 95BMWIC has given you a good idea of what it should look like when done essentially as close to bare metal as you can get.
