I know this is the F30 section but from what I can tell the 2.0 diesel was much more common in this platform than the F25 (at least here in Canada, 2 years only). I hope its OK to post this here. Here goes:
Our 2015 X3 2.8d has been to the dealer 6 times in 3 months. Grunt. (under warranty)
CEL 1 - First they re calibrated something to do with a sensor in the exhaust.
CEL 2 - New sensor in the exhaust
CEL 3 - Another new sensor in the exhaust
CEL 4 - All new exhaust system and DPF
Latest check eng. light
CEL 5 - Vehicle failed high RPM airflow test so: Downstream Knock sensor and the swirl flaps need to be replaced and 10+ hours of walnut blasting in the intake.
^Anyone had similar issues? What on earth do swirl flaps do? Will a delete (EGR) reduce intake buildup? I'm already looking to a DPF delete... or selling once the warranty is up. The hangup is my wife and I love it soooooo much when it works!
Thanks,
Cam
Don't know what a "downstream knock sensor" is. Also, there are several sensors in the exhaust: at least two NOx sensors, one or two O2 sensors, pressure sensors around the DPF to decide when the ash mass is high and a regeneration cycle is needed. More information is needed.
I will say that the NOx sensors have been very problematical - BMW extended the warranty on them in the E90 335d/E70 X5d to 10/120K.
Swirl flaps cause differing velocities in the airflow into the two intake ports and promotes better combustion. They open/close at different rpm.
The diesel subforum is the best place to post. Might also check the X3 forums.
Hmm, my parents just got one of those, with low miles, and no known issues yet.
I don't think there's a knock sensor...
Need more detail.

The exhaust sensors were indeed Nox sensors and I suspect the "downstream knock sensor" is probably a "downstream Nox sensor" (lost in translation)
Ill look for the diesel sub forum, Thanks.
