Just don't call them "Beamers" or "Beemers!" "Bimmer" is the correct nomenclature.

That's what the Brits call them.

so, you said to ask-here it is. when i got this car, it had a cooling system issue that i could see. (pressurizes and pumps out through blled screws/cap) so i am going to put in a thermostat, but my question is-do i need to get the big dollar one, or is the behr one good enough? i have read some posts where some of you don't like the behr stuff. anyway-thanks for your responses.

Sorry, I have no opinion on the thermostat other than I tend to use cheap parts and usually they work great.

I’ve had no problems with the Behr Hella thermostats on my current and past E39’s.

Yes, Behr is OE, which is good IMO.
Wahler is also OE, what is originally on the car.
I have the Wahler thermostat on my lowly E39.

FWIW, I've had failures of a Wahler thermostat at low mileage (<10,000 miles). I went with a Genuine BMW thermostat most recently, and it's been good.

The Wahler cracked in the center and stuck open, letting the engine cool on cold days.

this is comprehensive, so almost everything has been replaced now, just a couple more switches. (looks like one i need to solder in) next will be suspension, but that will have to wait til spring. putting it away for the winter soon.

this forum is invaluable for info. cheers everyone who puts up info.
