I want to purchase some 20" wheels, 20x10.5 40mm offset on all 4 corners. The preferred tire choice is 275/40/20 all around. Problem is, the load rating per rim is 1280lbs. Now with what I researched about my truck the curb weight is 5335lbs. Does this mean that when I multiply 1280 x 4, the total must be less than the vehicle curb weight in order for it to be deemed safe?
If you look at the VIN label on your driver's door or door jamb...you should see a GAWR (gross axle weight rating) listed. Wheel load rating requirements are determined by dividing the vehicles heaviest gross axle weight rating by 2.
If you look at the pic below of a 2006 X5 4.4 VIN label...you can see that the front GAWR = 2789 lbs...and the rear GAWR = 3307 lbs:
