    ZF Drain and fill

    Hey all,
In the coming week I'm going to drain and fill the tranny on this 98 740il I just bought. I've watched a coupe videos and have experience with transmissions. In the most detailed procedure I've watched the mechanic drains, fills, runs through the gears then tops off. Problem is that the fill plug is really close to the exhaust and I'm not a fan of burnt flesh (well, burnt human flesh anyway). Would waiting for the exhaust to cool off a little affect filling the transmission to any great degree? I'd like to hear some thoughts on the process.......

Unfortunately it will end up leaving you about a quart shy of full. Once you stop the engine the ATF pickup stops and is allowed to drain back to the pan.
Some people have gotten around this by tilting the vehicle to the side. I don’t recommend that but others may.
My recommendation is just to invest in some quality mechanics gloves to avoid the potential burns.

I bought this and it makes it SO MUCH easier. Not hard to install.

The best benefit is you can check your fluid whenever you want
    without a mess.

PEOPLE BE CAREFUL WITH THESE !! They are iffy. I wasted $200 on on recently. it leaked alot of my trans fluid out in my driveway and the grinding to get it to make it fit was ridiculous honestly. Yes it was 100% installed 100% correctly following the directions and obviously common sense. Also, there is no support from the guy who made them. Every email I sent got ignored by him..... WTF!? It's just sitting in my garage now. Since there is no support I can't get the new parts i need to replace the defective ones. The seal is bad but honestly these are just REALLY poorly made and designed, sorry...Just my opinion but this is ridiculous, waste of $200 and I'm lucky I caught the leak quickly.

I'm not sure why one would check the fluid level that often. Where would the transmission oil go? After you filled it up properly and sealed everywhere it should be there 10 years later. It's not like it can burn and you would notice any leak anyway on your garage floor.

Thanks for the heads up. I will double check no drips from where it attaches to transmission. I don't need that headache either.
