obstruction in hose assy connecting to HPFP's (760i V12)?

I removed this hose assy from my car (2006 760i) and found that it has something pushed into the short hose at each end (these ends connect to the nipple on top of each HPFP). I tried pushing them out with compressed air but they are not budging.

I can not get a good picture as they are pushed in a bit too far but both appear to be the same and are copper colored possibly with a steel center (spent bullet casing perhaps).

At first I was wondering if they are some sort of valve but 100psi did not open them in either direction.

My question is are these obstructions supposed to be in there or is this a botch job to mask failing HPFP's ? A pity if it is the latter as this hose assy looks to be newly installed.

The hoses were blocked with steel rollers and definitely not supposed to be there! No doubt a dodgy repair for leaking HPFP.
