Hello,
I am very new to cars, but I am hoping to learn over time with the purchase of my (first car) 2004 BMW E46 318i a few days ago. For my first small project I'd like to replace the current head-unit in the car with a new android head-unit (the one shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twHBPqQip1Q). However before I do so, I'd just like to confirm whether if any general head-unit that is for the E46, will work with my car. The reason I am asking this is because I am unsure of what the difference is between the 316i, 318i, 320i etc. models of this car is. When I refer to Wikipedia, they appear to only differ in the type of Petrol engine used. So does that mean that the interior components and proportions is the same throughout the entire E46 series (e.g. installation of a head unit for any E46 will be the same as that in the aforementioned Youtube video)?
Thanks
The only difference is the engine, indeed. Between PFL and FL some other things change, but nothing related to the dash. A headunit that fits in an E46 should fit in any E46, the only thing to be aware of is the difference between the 16:9 nav and the 'BMW Business' radios, because with the nav the climate control panel is in a different location. Look on Google Images and you'll see what I mean. Not sure how difficult it is to move.
Go to the E46Fanatics forum and check out the audio section. The head unit in all E46s is either a DIN or double DIN. DIN is the physical size of the head unut. A double DIN is 2x as high. All othe dimensions are the same as a FIN head unit.
