Hello from TX, new here! I recently picked up 2 01 740s in a package deal. One for a daily driver with a little work and the other most likely for parts as it has slight front end damage, a bad? transmission and 235k miles. The "good" one has 185,000 miles, but is in nice shape in and out. Interior just needs love. I checked the buyers guide here before going to look and sure enough there was quite a bit wrong with them, LOL. Typical e38 stuff it seems from reading! broken c pillars, shimmy, needs new emblems, seat switch holders, etc, etc..How ever, the engine and transmission seem 100% and at the price i got them both for, i couldnt pass them up. Is it just me or are these getting a little harder to find? Especially nice ones. I plan to fix the good one up by washing & waxing it, thoroughly cleaning the interior ( And possibly swapping it to black! ) replacing the trans fluid/filter, valve cover and intake gaskets and doing the brakes to start. Suspension in front and rear is pretty new and it was a full rebuild struts and springs included.
I am looking forward to working on / fixing up this car and posting updates here. Seems like a great forum! I will make sure I read up and thoroughly search around if i have any problems before posting. Thanks all!!

Thank you guys. I have decided to part the one 2001 with the bad trans and front end damage, not worth fixing up, its had a hard life. I'm taking the black interior for the other 740 and some other stuff before i let it get crushed though.
I'm close to your area and also have an '01. I have addressed several common issues on my DIY website (link in signature).
What color interior is the one that you are swapping in the black interior? Welcome to the forum also

Those cars were quite rare - prototypes, pre-production and first-production examples of all the different model variants. Most of them would never have left the confines of the BMW test track, trade fairs and environmental chambers.....

Got the car tonight. Needs an alt for sure and rear bumper. Don't have a bumper or alt laying around, but can be sourced for much less than the $2k the PO was quoted lol. May register it and drive it into ground then part instead of parting right away if it all checks out. engine runs sooo unbelievably good/quiet and trans is fine, it'd be a sin to scrap them. New tires, struts, gas tank, brakes and battery. They are parting because of the bad alternator. They seemed very scared about it and said quotes for parts and labor were up into the thousands?? Guy bought a new car. Oh well, your loss my gain. Parts value.....$4500. resale value....$450. lol...
My total investment is $550
If i sell cats tmrw then $450 total.

So I parted that 00 and both 01's. Scrapped all three of them as practically frames/shells. Every good part was pulled, except the engines them selves, exhaust diffs, fender liners, front and rear subframes, & driveshafts, few other things, odds and ends, some stuff was junk..etc... I pulled everything off the engines though and sold/am selling the stuff. Even pulled the valve body and trans pan off the one with the bad trans. Timing covers, valve covers, intake manifolds, p/s pumps, abs modules, pillars, calipers, gas tanks, etc.
Some one here had messaged me and wanted to come get the carpets, message me again to remind me if still interested.
If anyone needs anything let me know and I will let you know if it's still available.
I sold a 97 740 recently that i had flipped and now i will be buying it back from him because he blew the tranny so if you need anything from that yr. range, let me know..
