    ALPINA B7 Supercharger

If your SC is leaking oil, it is quite easy to replace the seals (if the impeller does not have the "wobble" to it yet). Just received a seal kit from a fellow forum member on the "other" forum (nervnom3) and started the process last night.

First step is to disassemble the blower housing, and everything went as planned, until I took out all of the bolts, this is where it came to a screeching halt!

Okay people, I am going to vent a bit here because it seems that the previous owner of my B7 decided that a few tubes worth of PERRMATEX are far superior to replacing the O-rings that actually prevent the oil from leaking. It is all good until sometime in the very near future that sealant fails, and you have to disassemble everything that has been GLUED together!! It took a few hours just to get the two halves separated, another 3 hours to carefully remove all of the sealant and clean everything (use a very soft plastic scrapper to prevent damaging the sealing surfaces), and about 30 minutes to finish cleaning everything in preparation for reassembly.

When you go to put everything back together, make sure there is a slight coating of motor oil on all of the rotating parts, and do not attach the SC serpentine belts until you have started the car and the oil has had a chance to circulate up into the Supercharger.

Looking kind of worn, even from the outside:

    That was all, carry on....

Thanks for the post! How did you determine the seals needed replaced? I assume it was leaking?

The quickest way to verify that oil consumption is from leaking SC seals, is to pull the rubber boot off the lower intercooler port, if oil runs out, you have leaking seals. Every single seal was hard as a rock on mine, but now everything is wonderful again. It really is not that difficult if you have some mechanical skills and work in an orderly fashion. Looks brand new now and will be installed first thing in the morning.

She’s a work of art! Mine only has 50k and installed the lower temp thermostat. I hope that help with longevity, but given the RPMs and heat, it’s just a matter of time.

Still my favorite BMW I’ve ever owned though... although my 850 M73 swap is almost done! , so we’ll see after that!

These seals really should be replaced as part of a preventative maintenance cycle every 60k-70k miles...

Looks fantastic. Were you seeing any external smoke?

Does your B7 have the odd, laggy throttle that many seem so be plagued with? Just a characteristic of the beast? No B7 owners to can quiery local to me.

Not really, when I first got the car, I was amazed at the snappy response. When I pulled the Supercharger and did the seals and general cleaning, I found 3 shop towels lodged in the intercooler intake that the last "mechanic" forgot, so I was completely thrilled again since the car is much quicker now.

I did take it by the dealer for a misfire diagnosis (didn't throw a code, but you could tell it wasn't 100%). Dealer came back with: 1."replace plugs and coils" (I put new plugs and coils in less than 1200 miles before). 2."Alternator bracket leaking" (I just finished that job a few weeks earlier - the oil was from a loose SC intake boot and the failed SC Seals), 3. "engine mount needs replacing" (okay, that was on my list to do, and I did just complete that), 4. "fix leaking SC oil supply line" (wasn't leaking - see #2 above), 5. "replace front lower control arms" (also on my to-do list - parts were already in the garage and was just completed last weekend).

The quoted price for all the dealer "fixes" came to $12,015 after tax. I spent less than $350 for seals, arms and engine mounts.

This is why I do my own work...

Just posted an impeller solution in another thread. Much cheaper than a new SC. Let me know if you can't find it

    Hi Guys,

I'd like to just highlight your attention that there's a cheaper solution than buying a new supercharger for the leaking supercharger issue. Just contact TheCrazyDIYengineer. You can find it on this link: www.thecrazydiyengineer.com
