Hi all. I am new to this forum but have been active on e46fanatics for awhile. A little background- my son just bought a project car 1992 318i M42 vert. This is a father-son project that is simply for fun and learning so yes we are thinking about some stupid mods. One thing I would like thoughts on is upgrading the intake system. I’m not looking at forced inductoin but throttle body/MAF mods. One that looks cool is adding M3 throttle bodies (I know the M is 6 cyl and mine is a 4, but I know how to deal with that). Does anyone have suggestions or help about this? Also is there any drop in MAF replacement/upgrade? What ECU change would be needed? There are a couple cheap Dinan chips on eBay if those would work.
finally, on the exhaust side, any experiences with eBay headers?
thanks for helping out an old man and his son.
the e30 m3 is a 4 cylinder. the 6 was not till the e36 models.
no idea about the other stuff because I never did anything with the 91 318 I had, back in the day. I would say try and chip and ebay header and see how it does
No e30s again.
eBay headers don't fit as often as they do fit. Buy at your own risk. Also don't buy a chip from eBay; most of those sellers have stolen tunes from legitimate tuners like sssquid, Mark D'sylvia, Turner, etc.
Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one?

Yeah, I have heard about poor fitting eBay headers so I asked the question in hopes that someone might have a specific recommendation.
As for mods to the engine itself, you might poke around on the e36 forum which also used the M42.

I believe that I'm correct in saying that M-42's don't take a chip, but you can have the ECU re-mapped. I would start there.
