MPG on a 2015 325i vs 330e running on gas alone

I compare my ACTUAL mpg on a 2015 328i (about 32 mpg) vs my 2017 330e (hybrid) running on gas alone mode (about 25 mpg).
Both engines are 2 liter, 4 cylinder engines. I cannot envision why the hybrid would be less efficient than the gas only car.
Any ideas ? (based on knowledge)

I would think weight would hinder the mpg. I have a 2013 328i and over the last 55,000 miles, I have averaged 29.8mpg.

Hmm, that's a thought. The batteries are heavy. But still, it is a rather large difference... I was thinking different engine design? Although I cannot figure out why.
