I've got this in my BMW australian version little booklet
520i is a beast.JPG
Confusing as to why the 520i is so much faster than the 525i. Going by wiki stats the 520i is only 40kg lighter but down 40kw power and 40Nm torque compared to the 525.
Is it a misprint or was there something I'm missing?

Definitely misprint 110 vs 190 hp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M50#M50B20
520 wasn't sold in US but in Russia they considered slow and M50B25 much preferred
There have been a few threads expressing surprise that a 520i was comparable or even faster than a 525i.
I owned a '91 520i while stationed in Italy (2006-2010) and I can definitely tell ya that they will FLY down the Autostrada. I could easily cruise at 180 kph all day with it.

It would be interesting to test them both fitted with the same options... Wonder if a bare-bones 520 (ie. manual everything, no sunroof, etc...) is quicker than a fully-loaded 525
mate i am from Straya as well, the 1994 E34 520i book must have been revised as the 525 shows higher gains in top speed and acceleration bmw performance.jpg
It was just to fool the east germans/russians before reunification I bet :-)
My car and booklet is from 1990 and still marked "West Germany"
Yeah fo3 your prolly right least it is not in German, who knows maybe transmission/diff set up was different then, have ordered a performance chip for the ecu if it does what it is meant to do should give me a bit more than what i got now
my 525i got out of its own way when it was stock but the m20 it has. I discovered that when boosted becomes a great daily shredder. for about the same amount you would take to swap could just beef up the internals and bam.. power speed and still old faithful to crank up like a champ.. never seen a 520. but my stock 525i was 4100lbs... heavy.. very heavy.. power everything.. after gutting it i dropped sooooooo much weight.. the seats themselves were 65lbs a piece. back top and bottom bench was like a led brick. it currently sits at 3087.
