I'd love to get one, but $580 is out of the e38 budget.

How does this compare to the cheaper one piece alternatives online? I have a one-piece one. But it requires me removing it from each strut tower to work on the engine, which I'm afraid will mess with my alignment. The strong strut looks like you can remove the center bar without having to loosen the rings. Is that the point of the allen bolts?

Yes rings stay in place while you remove the bar for engine maintenance. Does not affect your alignment.

I have the basic bar now where I have to remove from the strut towers to get to the engine. Does that affect the alignment? I feel like it could?

No, it shouldn't. There is little to no movement in the 3 top mount holes and unless you have a turn buckle in the bar you should not have any preload on the towers. That being said, remove and reinstall with the car sitting on it's wheels. If you install a strut bar with a car jacked up you could lock in any natural deflection in the towers.

What is your all's take on the strong strut vs one of those "cheaper" ones? Does it function the same? Or does the strong strut have less flex? Planning on buying one but that is a chunk of change for a bar.

Trying to start an internet expert argument?
The strong strut bar is a solid piece of aluminum cut from flat stock. The others are welded tube. A straight bar is the most rigid. I'm no engineer, but I think a solid piece is better than welded ones.

The P.O. said it was the first one built as he was friends with the builder, but I don't know

It's for looks. The strong strut is jewelry and a beautiful piece. I put on the steel one that was a $180 and run my car at the track. The steering is a little sharper but the money would have been better spent on a sway bar.

Aluminum VS Steel tube is no contest, steel is stronger. Aluminum is lighter and easier to machine.
