I've got a 1986 325e, and in my state (RI), cars older than 2001 don't have to pass inspection, so would it be okay if I just got rid of the catalytic converter, straight pipe it, and add a muffler? (I don't want the car to be loud) Could anything happen to the car if I do?
that is your state inspection but the federal law is anything from sometime in the early or mid 70s and older have to have that stuff. not saying you will get in trouble but just letting you know.
I never had any trouble when I was doing work and had to drive with no cat for a while. on an eta, also
No e30s again.
What I've heard from people who have done it is that layout has a tendency to drone. In that era, even non-cat E30's used a resonator in that location. Best thing to do for your 'e' car is to see if you can source a complete used 'i' exhaust.

…and likely your ‘tune’ will be off.
There is an AWSOME shop in Spokane, WA that produce a great header cat-less exhaust system for an E30 that is good for 15 ft-lbs torque.
