Hi guys,
I was wondering if there is any cheaper fix to replace wheel bearing (driver side rear). Local shops are quoting insanely high labor ($600-700!). I was wondering if swapping out the wheel carrier (used) would be cheaper? Is anyone parting out 2008 -2010 335i/335d in the southeast?
The rears are tricky and require various pullers and other special tools as well as a lot of disassembly/reassembly, which is probably why you're getting the estimates you are. The fronts are much easier, as they simply bolt on in your case. I don't think you'd really save anything replacing the whole rear hubs/carriers, since you still have to do about the same amount of labor (maybe more) and you still don't know if you're getting a good bearing with it. Also, you really need to replace wheel bearings in pairs, so both rears in your case.
So bite the bullet and pay for it, or try to DIY it. It's certainly possible to DIY, but it's probably an all day affair by yourself and you'll need to buy or borrow some special tools:
