I'm disputing the value of my 1997 540iA w/DINAN stage 4 package. It was wiped out by a drunk driver while parked and the appraiser for the insurance company is trying to say it was made in the US and he put a price of $2800 on it. Could someone help me to verify that it was made in Germany and give me an idea of the value? Possibly the production number as well? Thank you!

The VIN will indicate where it was built. This is a post I grabbed off another forum that hopefully will help you out:
"The first 3 digits of your VIN would normally tell you the manufacturers code:
WMA = BMW AG (Germany)
NCO = BMW South Africa
4US = BMW Spartanburg SC USA
....but I believe that after 1999MY, BMW no longer uses the codes - NCO or 4US.
....so if you want to know the plant of manufacture for your specific car you need to look at digit 11 of your VIN:
L = Spartanburg USA
A,F,G,K = Munich, Germany
B,C,D = Dingolfing, Germany
E,J = Regensburg, Germany
N = South Africa"
Also, I don't know if this will help in your particular situation, but when I totalled my bike I went on numerous auto sales resources (craigslist, auto-trader, etc.) and found vehicles that were very similar to mine to use as a comparison. It shouldn't necessarily be about the single car value but really the MARKET value of the vehicle.
It would seem like your vehicle was built in Dingolfing, Germany.

To my knowledge, no e39s were manufactured in the United States. The appraiser is a dinglebutt. Why does it matter where the care was built anyway?
