Hey there,
I have an undiagnosed sound coming from front left wheel well/undercarriage of bmw 335i. The problem has persisted for about 8 months and was not fixed even after trips to three different mechanics.
Solutions that have been tried
1) Drive belt replaced
2) Timing belt Tensioners readjusted
3) unrelated but the coolant system was flushed and tested. thermostat and water pump replaced. coolant is not leaking.
Are there any gear heads / enthusiasts on here that have any idea what could be making this sound?!?!?!?!

Hi Ross, and welcome to the forum.
You have a bad pulley. Please don't take this as a flame, but you do not have a timing belt.
Forget the wheelwell, the noise is from the engine. Remove the belt, and then spin and wiggle each pulley. OR, get a mechanic's stethoscope ($20 or less at Sears, Napa, Autozone), and listen to each pulley (ON A NON-SPINNING SPOT!), with the belt on, engine running.
If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, you need to find a BMW specialist shop, NOT a generic mechanic.
A BMW tech should be embarrassed if he can't find a noise like that in half an hour of your time.

Hey thanks to Chris for the reply!!! I sent your post to my mechanic, where my 335i currently is being repaired in San Francisco.
I received advice from another technician suggesting that the valve cover and a rear main seal may be the issue. My mechanics shop sent me this email...
Hi Ross, regarding your 335i;
We evaluated the pulleys and they check out.
While the vehicle was running and the high pitched squeal was being emitted we did an experiment.
We took the oil cap off when the engine squeal noise was occurring.
Then the high pitched squeal noise went away.
The noise could be heard when engine had been run for about 1 hour.
We think the Valve Cover is the problem.
We did inspect any oil leak near engine and transmission area (for rear main seal issue) and found none.
Here is detail of cost for repair.
1.Valve Cover : $526.00
2. Valve Cover Gasket : $54.52
3. Drive Belt Tensioner : $125.65
4. Labor : $679.00
5. Total : $1,445.19
Just wondering if this seems plausible to you Chris given the sounds in the posted video?
Just answered your pm.
Unless the valvecover is cracked, you can just replace the diaphragm, which will save you a TON of money for the valvecover and the labor. This can be replaced without removing the valvecover !
Your shop may not know this part exists:
