Hi all , finally got everything back together and started the car. Did one initial turn over for 20 seconds without fuel pump, then replaced fuse, cranked and started almost straight away. Making a lot of noise at first but soon settled down as oil got into lifters and valve train. I'm assuming you don't have any lasting damage from such a dry start? Have never heard the M62TU prior to this first start - really nice sounding motor hey!
Once all sorted and on the road, will be putting an xcelplus treatment though the engine (old original formula of 'slick 50'). As per the many independent tests done by various government bodies, my E34's fuel economy went from about 12l/100kms to 8-9l/100km (19mpg to about 26mpg). Amazing stuff that just works, just google xcelplus.
By the way, thanks for all the help.
John
PS. That fuel economy figure is steady on the highway at 100 kph (60mph). Around town averages about 12.
