hey guys just finished installation of a jb4 in my 09 335i
i just recently did a walnut blast and the car runs much better
i have relatively new plugs and haven't thrown a code for any coils
the car started up no problem and i went for a quick drive without changing the map - it was set to the default. the car felt MUCH faster
within a minute or two at the most, the engine began to shake and shudder and run extremely rough - i immediately backed off throttle and drove it back home with RPM's under 2k
i pulled a few new codes:
P0080 exhaust valve control solenoid circuit high (bank 1)
P0400 exhaust gas recirculation flow
P0002 fuel volume regulator control circuit range/performance
i had the following codes prior to the installation and i knew about the issue - bad cats P0420 and P0430 - maybe that's the issue ?
any idea what's wrong ?
should i try putting it back to stock ?

i'm at a loss and i need to drive to work tomorrow
1. Back to stock
2. Get a scanner that can read BMW codes - can the JB4 do that?
3. Fix the cats or O2 sensors as needed, deal with any other codes
4. Try the upgrade again once the car is working properly
Are you gonna eat that?
did you buy this JB4 new or used?

Since you definitely need your vehicle to arrive at work,
I would be furiously reverting my DME to stock!
it was bought off eBay and the person who i bought it from said it was never installed - it looked as if it was new to me
i can say that when i press the down arrow and the - button simultaneously on the steering wheel, the menu comes up as it should and i can switch between maps
i just tried starting my car and drove around the block not boosting and all seemed normal with the world - i was on map 0 for this - there was no shuddering like there was the first time.
when i initially installed it, started the car and went for a drive, i had not changed any setting at all - i didn't even go into the menu
thoughts ?
Btw,
this is exactly the reason why I don't screw with my daily driver!
Have a civilized vehicle for DD duties,
and keep your modding projects separately!

The shuddering my have just been everything adjusting/adapting to new settings.

i just tried starting my car again after the incident and drove around the block not boosting and all seemed normal with the world - i put it to map 0 for this - there was no shuddering like there was the first time.

i also used the jb4 to pull codes and got the following:
29F4 - i knew about this one and had it before install of jb4
29F5 - i knew about this one and had it before install of jb4
these 3 codes are brand new as of tonight - seems odd that "all of a sudden" i get misfires after jb4 install - i mean "maybe" it could be a coincidence that as soon as i installed it a plug or coil has gone bad but idk

I don't know, maybe it's just me,
but common sense would have steered me to simply,
fix the present codes(BEFORE JB4),
thereby starting with a clean, error free, platform,
then improving/modifying a clean slate,
but do as you will!
Yyup.
Are you gonna eat that?
lol
the issues with the downpipes (bad cats) will be solved this thursday - no codes for O2 sensors
and i didn't get any codes before this with my plugs or coils - only thing that may be an issue is new coils as there's only 1 that i know of that's *new-ish*
maybe my dual ports need to be adjusted to accommodate the increase in PSI ?
i don't seem to have an issue on map 0 but map 1 is where things went wrong
now that there's a higher boost level, it's possible they need to be tightened...
i did check the charge pipe and attached - it's all connected - no problems going from the throttle body to the intercooler
Hey juicehound,
I'd try to assist. There are many things that come to mind. (limited time)
However, you may wish to try the BMS (JB4) peeps at www.n54tech.com.
This is a great forum, however @ n54tech you'll get direct info on the JB4.
What FW is on the JB4?
What are your settings? (did you follow their settings post?)
Obtain a log, with 6 cyl timing enabled.
Over boosting is awesome. It'll also expose every weakness in your system. Just have to maintain the car much better.
O2 sensors can be quite relevant ... make care run flawless, then introduce new options.
thanks !
i posted there as well
not sure what firmware it is - don't have a USB cable w/ it to check
i hear you there
so i was able to drive to work and back home on map 0 with NO issues - i'm doing downpipes this thursday as well as all 4 o2 sensors so we'll see what that does - until then i'm driving it on map 0
Sweet. Wishing you the best.
P.S. You'll want to log and configure your JB4... maybe even update FW if dated. You'll want USB or Bluetooth connection. (I like my Bluetooth Rev. 3 My phone is on a high speed charging magnet mount that always shows the JB4 gauges... pretty nice)
ok so i got the new o2 sensors and downpipes along with new plugs and coils. i reset the ECU and have been running on map 0 with no codes so far !
i will do further testing with map 1 and 2 and see what happens
codes2 how did you get bluetooth to work w/ jb4 ?
Hey juicehound,
JB4 Smart Phone Wireless Connect Kit (Rev. 3)
http://www.burgertuning.com/bluetoot...nnect_kit.html
Seriously worth it in my opinion!
thank you !
i am interested in getting this however if i do would i HAVE to update the firmware on my jb4? reason i'm asking is b/c i heard something about the new firmware not being able to auto clear and that's not something i want to have to see - i've already seen enough CEL / SES lights and i'm done with seeing more !
on a side note, i've been running w/ map 0 for a few days now just to see what would happen and i just got a CEL / SES light that came on and the jb4 read 3 codes
2FA3 - no clue what this is
29F4 - this is due to the removal of the stock cats and was expected
29F5 - same thing - this one was expected w/ no cats as well
one thing that i did notice on my diverter valves is that on two occasions under heavy throttle they released pressure in a premature fashion with a quick "woosh - woosh" occurrence when it should only be a single release of air upon shifting or throttle release and NOT during throttle like these 2 times
any ideas ?
