They need to reference the E31 in order to help sell the new overstyled 6-Series, I mean 8-Series...

Nice catalogue. Why on earth are the colors Red and Yellow NOT in the choices. So ridiculous. Such boring colors. They will lose a lot of orders based on the lack of Red alone. Red is a very popular sports car color.
I am a huge fan but after trying out the AMG GT yesterday I am torn. And the 911 is a strong contender
BMW is calling it "The Gentleman's Racer".
This means you'll generally lose the race, but you'll happily wave a "Cheerio!" to the guy kicking up rocks in your grill as he speeds off with his middle finger out the window.
Also, in this (admittedly) politically correct world we now live in, how did they get away with not being forced to use "gentle person's racer"? Lol
Either way, I can't wait until I can be considered a gentleman so I can get one. I still hate the front end and that ridiculous Swarovski shift knob, but I have no problem separating it from the 6 series (the little chrome badging on the back helps remind you).
I've got all the press shots of the M850i xDrive on my phone and they automatically rotate through my lockscreen and phone wallpaper. Whenever isometric shots of the rear end show up, I'm immediately soothed and feel warm inside.
If we could only get Bangle to manage the front end and Van Hooydonk the back end, just imagine the result. Although, 'Bangle-butt' has such a stigma, it would be hard for Adrian to earn the nick-name Van Hooypadonkadonk in a positive light.
I'm with Alec on the color palette issue. This has become an absolute epidemic with BMW. I tried building an X4 the other day on the website for fun. I found most cars have 2-3 blues, 2-3 blacks, 2 silvers, alpine White and depending on the sportiness of the model, maybe one or two 'oddball' colors like sunset orange or galvanic gold, or if a more mundane car, a shade of brown. How have the marketing people been allowed to continue this nonsense?
I would hope for the new $125k+ 8 Series however, that there's going to be an individual program like there was for the E31? M8 coupe in hellrot or brilliantrot over black please. Don't worry guys, I'll have a 'daily driver' lower spec 8 series made too, in Oxford Green or Alpina green over saddle.

They do have an individual program. It will be interesting to see what we can get over here in the US. Also the new pictures of the M8 is really better looking in my opinion.
So......it's consistent with its E31 predecessor.
But hey, I'm okay with that performance aspect -- because I understand the differences between a GT car and a sports car and a race car. I would call myself indifferent (at best) on the new car's styling. Like 99% of what is out there from any manufacturer these days, it's just another transportation appliance. I increasingly find the mainstream automotive press (Automobile, Car and Driver, etc.) to be good bedtime reading, as they produce page after page of dull yawns, each in your choice of grey.
Cheers, John
Fair disclosure re: irony -- the post immediately above was written by a guy whose garage currently houses a silver pickup, a silver BMW, a black BMW, a grey SUV, and a black SUV. I guess those "marketing people" have sorted out what most people actually buy.
Case in point:
https://jalopnik.com/you-can-now-con...8-s-1826983026
Very interesting. The "diesel variant" mentioned for the foreign market would raise my level of interest in the car by at least a full order of magnitude. Sadly, the US hardly ever gets the option of a good oil-burner.
I've actually toyed with the idea of shoehorning an N57 (335d) drivetrain in my beater E31, just for the novelty of having probably the only State-side 835d. I have some confidence in my ability to make it fit physically, but in an age of ten thousand computers and CAN-bus and all of that, I've got no idea whether I could ever make the thing run. There is the Nira stand-alone ECU that would probably work, and I hear that some E46 manual transmissions will bolt up...but you've spent about ten grand in parts right there before you even get started! Still, a fun thought experiment if nothing else. (In the highly unlikely event that I ever tackle such insanity, there will be a used M70 and S6S 560G transmission on the market.)
Cheers, John
Sadly the E31 pictured in the release is a far-from-flattering shot of the new car's "predecessor".
Surely BMW have some better E31 pics in their archives......

On the other hand, it may have been a deliberate marketing ploy, to try and make the new model look fresher and more attractive.
But of course, we all know the E31 was the prettiest of them all.

OK guys, after starting this thread back in 2016 (https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...50i-M850xi-M8)), and participating in this thread, finally today (almost 2019), I have finally had a chance to see the G15 M850i in person.
Our local BMWCCA chapter president and myself (treasurer) went in to our local dealer today, as we had an appointment with the service manager who is our liaison for the club. After the meeting was over we spent some time with the general manager and the M850i they had just gotten in. It was funny as the GM admitted that their salesman training classes have heavy emphasis on differentiating the 8 series from the previous 6 series. Apparently a lot of potential buyers are coming into the dealerships with the 'crazy notion' that this $120K car is just a replacement for the outgoing 6 series, which somehow devalues the car's merits and high asking price.
Certainly the new G14/15/16 cars have a ton of cool tech and very good performance for the size of the car. In my opinion they also have the correct amount of impracticality, which is required for me to even consider as a 'desirable' car. To me the Grand Coupe version will have too much practicality, and the convertible too little.
That said (as a long time E31 owner and 8 series fanatic), I think the new G15 is an absolute failure where it counts the most, and that is in the outward design shape. I had my doubts when Adrian van Hooydonk presented to us the 8 series concept. But I wanted to reserve judgment from photos and video reviews until I actually saw the proportions and design language with my own eyes. In a single word: "predictable'. The lines of the car are just so boring and uninspired. Sure I know a lot went into the new design language, and the car fits in nicely with all the other BMWs of this generation.... But that's exactly what set apart the E31 from the pack; straying away from the 'safe bet'. Eight days after the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the car already had 5000 pre-orders, and by mid-summer 1990, almost 12,000 cars were allocated into 1993. On the backside, we all know how the E31 story ended, with slumping sales, decreasing production, and the car being relegated as 'BMW's best failure'. But it was a revolution when it was released, and I think we as E31 fans, are deeply in tune with the elements that made the first 8 series such a show stopper.
Conversely, I sure don't see people waiting in line for this new G15 'flagship car', and our local dealer said they'll be lucky to get just a couple of allocations. They are prepared to have this one in the showroom for a while. For $120K, and 30 years later, I want some damn revolution.

If a pristine E31 was parked along side a new one, which do you think the crowd would be circled around?! I caught a quick glimpse of one in Midland a few days ago. Turned at the light about 3 cars in front of me. As said, rear is not bad, but was disappointed in the general lines as it turned. Now, seeing these showroom pics- what a mistake. They blew it.

Yikes, reminds me of a Z4 front end.
At the showroom of my dealer in Germany, the new 8 is parking by side a E31 CSi. Nice to look at this two cars. :-)
Here in Germany, the new M850i stats at 125700€ (=143558 USD)
Great pics of a not so great "NextGen" "8"! I still need to see it in the flesh cause what I see in photos is uninspiring. Plus, it needs more cylinders.
1993 850Ci.....18 years & 165,000 miles and counting!
Haha yea you gotta see it in the flesh before reserving judgment, but in my case it only confirmed my assumptions.
If I was loaded (as in oil baron Sheik rich), I'd buy a new M850i along with the new M760i and swap that V12 over at all costs. Just to show 'em how it's done without marketeers in the way! Lol
4 short!
Concur with all. What a bummer.
