Long story short, I purchased an airbox online to replace my broken mess of an airbox. I realized that the airbox is slightly larger so Im assuming its for the 3.0L M54b30. Fortunately, it came with the MAF and boot, so I plugged it in and Im receiving no CEL.
It's a great, like-new airbox that I got for really cheap so I'd love to use it. Any issues with that?
Are you talking about the air filter enclosure? If so, enjoy it, if it fits.

Yes, maybe thats why I cant find any google results on it. Specifically, 13711716218. BMW calls it the 'Intake Muffler'
It fits a whole bunch of models: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...218&series=E39

Just in case anyone reads this...
I diagnosed the vacuum leak I had, it was the CCV oil return hose. This was installed before the fix. I still had a rough idle, stumbling, and the lean CEL came on at quick starts. I ended up switching BACK to the 2,5L airbox and air flow sensor. It resolved the issue. I would not recommend installing a 3.0 airbox and air sensor on a 2.5L. It didnt fit super well either and you would need the front intake book as well.
Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah I didn't see this before but could have told you the MAF tube was gonna be the problem, as that part IS different. If you could have used the same MAF tube, the box itself shouldn't have made a bit of difference. Using the wrong MAF means wrong air metering to the motor (motor probably was running lean?) and no good unless you fix the tune for it...

I wanted to use my MAF but it would have required some plastic welding to make it fit. For those who really want to know, the piping from the aixbox is larger, the MAF is a wider diameter, and it leads to a different intake boot. The second intake boot that connects to the engine is the same, but since everything before that point is different, its moot.
Frustrating that its the same part number but the parts ARE different. Just be sure to get the 2.5L M54 airbox and everything unless you are looking to retune.
I think you're confused about the parts and numbers there j-rod. Very much that's not "the same part number".
Different parts get different numbers, always. Even if there's a supercession where a part is microscopically changed or improved, but is exact-drop-in-replacement, BMW virtually always issues a new PN.
The 'baby' M54 engines yes seem to use the same parts as all the older M52's, airbox 13711716218, with associated smaller MAF tube etc. etc.
The 'proper' M54 engines - as one would expect - use a distinctly different number airbox, 13711440058, with associated larger MAF tube etc. etc.

You could have tried running the 3L tune however you'd have to swap the 3.0 squirtjectorz too, and obv it wouldn't have been optimalized.
