My bad if this question has been answered many times before in the forums but I can’t find the answer I’m looking for. I bought a 2000 z3 coupe over the summer and got two keys, both with the single button on it that triggers an orange light when you click it but it does not unlock any of the doors. My brothers 2001 z3 coupe does the same thing. I was wondering if it has something to do with the transponder or some type of module or something else. I doubt it’s the battery in the key since it lights up when I click it.
You may have to reprogram your keys again to activate the central locking feature.
What you have is just a flashlight on key - to help you find the key hole. If the car is pre-wired for keyless entry/alarm (see marked clip in trunk) you can pick up the alarm/locking module fairly inexpensively on eBay. Some come with the key fob (separate from key - two or three button design) or they can be found / programmed aftermarket. I installed the keyless entry but did not connect the alarm siren as it is of no real value to me and might just false alarm.

Yep, flashing the flashlight is going to do nothing but show you the key hole.
My advice. Find a breakers yard with Z3s and see if any still have the oem alarm system fitted.
Remove all parts, control box, cable , siren and indicator light.
Then fit to your coupe.
Cost me about $27 for the system then another $60 for the actual fobs.

This is the thread you want - you even have more options as you can just find e36 control module.

First step: remove the glove box to see if you actually have a module. If you do, all you need is a fob.

MSportPartsdotcom has the fobs available. They include programming instructions with your order.
The button on your key is for an LED light in the key that seems to be working just fine. Nothing to do with keyless entry.

This site is filled w/ guys restoring their Z's to factory condition. If you are one of them, ignore my advice.
I bought 2 cheap Chinese keyless entry modules (one to have for spare parts because .. Chinese) for about $30 and just called it a day. Small remote to dangle w/ the key and it actually looks pretty similar to the key.
If you want OEM or nothing ... then read up on those other threads.
