Well let me say I am a total beginner. I just got my 1987 325i E30 a few weeks ago and I had no idea when the timing belt had last been changed. So I decided to do it myself I did the job fairly easily taking my time took about 5 and half hours again I am a beginner, but when I started the car it had a grinding noise from 1000 rpms to 1500rpms. This grinding noise isn't at any other rpm that I can hear. So any info on what that could be would be amazing thanks.
Is that while you're sitting still revving the motor?
Could this happen if the timing belt is loose I have the car back apart only took 45 mins this time lol
check your TDC marks to make sure everything is aligned properly. Easy to get one tooth off, although I don't know if that creates grinding noises or not. Try to figure out where the noise is from, a length of hose held to your ear while you probe areas of the motor can help locate the exact source of sounds. Like a stethoscope. They sell mechanic's stethoscopes at Harbor Freight as well.
Thank you for the help turns out the belt was just loose
Which belt?
Timing belt
I would recheck your timing marks..a loose belt could easily jump a few teeth.. If the belt does that rest assured you have bent valves.
If a new belt is loose it's almost certainly because it wasn't properly tensioned and/or the tensioner wasn't tightened down (my money is on this).if so, as ceeker says, you may have done some damage.
