Today my car started to give a rattling noise in 3rd and 5th gear. Basically, when my shifter is forward. I can feel it slighting in 1st gear too...but it's noticeable in 3rd and 5th only.
I pulled the tranny fluid, fearing that it might be low for some reason... everything was normal.
My shifter does exhibit some play, but I dont know if its outside of normal tolerance or not. I just hope it's not my flywheel. What do you guys think>?
Guibo (flex disc) ?

If something is loose enough to rattle inside your trans, there is nothing you can do other than buy another trans. What you are gearing probably is not that. Certainly look at your linkage, but remember that NVH travels and varies with rpm and speed. Could be a lot of things between the motor and the differential, but I agree with looking at the driveshaft first. Rubber coupler up front and rear u-joint if you have one (some have a CV joint). I’d also look at the motor mounts, trans mounts and diff mounts. And exhaust and heat shields.
Is it the heat shield rubbing on the shifter by the driveshaft? Climb under the car and take a look.
i dont know if this is the problem, but there's a ring that slipped off its rubber cushion on my driveshaft. It's where the driveshaft meets up with the tranny. It might be #2 (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=26_0284)
Some people remove the whole part #2. Some driveshafts have them, some don't. It isn't necessary as far as I know.

i had a wild experience while driving the car last night, the rattling got so bad where I could feel something hammering against something. Moreover, I was not able to take my car out of gear while in motion. I dont know if my experience is related to this worn out part or not, but I would like replace it to see. Today my car is acting completely fine...
i just hope its not the clutch bearing.
Since you haven't confirmed that it isn't the problem, I'll say guibo again.
Thanks. Ill replace that too then. Ive order both parts.
In the meantime, ive hammered the broken parts back together as much as possible. So far all is well
