I have a 97 328i that I've been working on. This is the first obd2 e36 I've worked on so it has more to the vacuum system than I'm used to. From what I have seen I have everything hooked up except the o2 sensors because the car currently has open headers. It's been sitting for awhile so the gas is probably bad as well. When I went to start it, it was hesitant and just puttered below 500 rpm. I pulled the maf off and sprayed a little starting fluid in and it started and ran better sat at 3k rpm for a few seconds. I let off the gas and noticed it took longer than usual for the rpms to fall and it won't hold an idle without tapping on the gas. Does this sound like a certain vacuum leak in particular? If not what vacuum lines should I check first?
TIA

Check the lines for the fuel pressure regulator http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...BMW-328i&mg=13
pull the vacuum hose off from the FPR and see if there is fuel dropping out, if so, FPR broken.

The idle air control valve could be sticking, you can remove it and clean it out.

I agree with the ICV but at the age of these cars I would check all the vacuum lines as well as the rubber grommets plus the plastic tee's in the vac lines. Most of mine were sht. Oh, also its really common for the rubber intake bellows to have a leak or it will have as soon as you look at it! Seriously, the vac lines are not anything special and these are not expensive parts so I would check/swap all of them out.

My car runs like shit with open headers. If I were you I'd actually get the car put all the way together before trying to make it run smoothly.

Alright thanks for the help guys, pulled the intake again this morning and found the one from the t to the intake was unhooked. Put It back together and now it's running better. I'll put the exhaust on later tonight once it's not 90+ in the garage and let you guys know if it helps

Hey I noticed that the car has an obd1 header and it and that the air injection system isn't hooked up. Would that affect how it runs?

In the winter it would set of a code if the SAP is not in place. But since your headers were changed, then either the car has a SAP SIM (simulator) somewhere mounted or it has the SAP removed from the coding of the main computer (DME). I don't know if it's possible that the coding was changed to make the car OBDI, I don't know what's possible in such a situation (or if possible).
