Issue is that 1995 1996 M73 came with the DMEs with 1 time write chips... has anyone had any luck to remove oem chips and install flashable chips?
Get in touch with firebird540. He's one of the authorities on 850Ci M73 tuning.
+1...im interested too! 95 M73

"Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car, Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car, Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, Torque is how far you take the wall with you."
Yeah he does? He owns one of the baddest 750iLs out there. He’s got videos of him tuning it on his website and offers tuning for M73 cars that you can buy right off the page.

All of them are for the E38 though, dont know if he does the E31

Lie I said guys, the tuning is for post 1997 M73, earlier versions have a one time write chip. That is the problem I am trying to solve.

How hard (or expensive) is it to run a pre-97 engine using a post-97 ECU with the modifications you want? I'm just wondering whether junking the entire computer and replacing it with another tunable one (or two or three, with the V12) gets you to your destination. Used units are all over eBay, assuming you can identify one with the reusable chips.
Cheers, John
What ever happened to this? any updates?

Last I heard no
The update is... you cannot do much at all to M73 powered E31's.
In a bit more detail, as far as I know Firebird is the only person who has been able to do any type of mods to the DME. I don’t know of any third-party that has been able to replicate his work.
I have also heard whispers that there is at least one E31 M73 running a completely custom engine management system, But never seen any independent proof.
The only other engine modification is the ‘Dinan’ Intake manifold extruding/hone to supposedly improve flow and give HP…. Even though it’s very well established that the flow limiting /bottleneck of the M73 head is the exhaust valve / port design…not the intake side.

Any ideas on how to upgrade or program the E31-M73 AT-EGS?
I believe "Firebird540" did the DME and EGS upgrades whey back when, however he lives in Germany and only did the upgrades in person when he came to Las Vegas.

I think BMW extracted just about all the torque/HP out of these 2-valve engines, however a 3.23:1LSD does wonders for rear wheel torque with only a minor RPM increase.
Personally, I would like a transmission "Sport Mode" M/S-Gate gear selection program update for the E31-M73.
1) M/S-Gate selection for 1st gear.
2) M/S-Gate Sport mode that uses 1st - 4th only.
E38-M73 and E31-M62 has the M/S-Gate but the E31-M73 only has an M-Gate.
The AT-EGS control units are all "GS: 9.22.1" with the E31-M73 "Code: NW" and the E38-M73 has a "Code OF"
Unfortunately, that I'm aware the EGS is not programmable in the car. I swapped an E38-M73 EGS into my E31 and it causes a Trans Program Fault.
I anticipate the hand-shake fails!!
Current E31-M73 transmission program cannot manually select 1st gear.
No Sport Mode selection with M/S-Gate; so the transmission normally shifts 2nd - 5th gear (aggressive throttle position at start-off will induce a head snapping 1st gear down shift at start off)
