Hello Everyone,
Posting here because I came across a lot of useful information on this site and I thought I share my process and of course, I need your help.
I’m using this site to journal the process. Most of these parts were sourced already, such as the S54 and GS6-37, along with a few gaskets. The remaining big ticket items are the wiring harness, clutch, and radiator and fan.
The first post will include updates as I go along, so expect edits on this post. I will probably change the parts list format later to incorporate other research.
Just thought I begin the process now and get this thing running for the summer.
Thanks for stopping by and reading…
Thoughts on below?

- You can either reuse the E36 M3 power steering pump with the E46 pulley (different diameter) or use the E46 M3 pump. If you use the E46 M3 pump however, you’ll need a one size larger banjo fitting since the banjo bolt is larger. Rest of the lines should land in the same place.

Notes...
S50B32 Euro M3 with the Getrag 420G and 210 mm diff, 6-bolt, came with a 1367mm long driveshaft (CV joint style).
Euro driveshaft is 102 mm (4.015") shorter than NA, 6-bolt, CV style.

- Heater hoses
- Which hose connects to chassis
- Fuel

- DIY
- To run at higher fuel pressure, it's a good idea to run the E46 M3 pump assembly. Unfortunately, the whole assembly doesn't fit an E36 tank, but the pump itself can be swapped into an E36 pump housing, and the original E36 wiring can be reused.
- Exhaust
- Step down conversion
- Headers
- S50 Manifold bolts; longer
- the eurospec headers for the S54 will bolt up to any *euro* E36 M3 midsection designed to attached to the S50B32 headers
- exhaust gasket still need
- Steering
- If you use an E36 PS pump, you'll need the E36 PS pulley. If using the E46 pump, then you can use the S54 pulley. If you don't use the pulley that came with the pump, it will not line up with where the belt routes. E46 pump works but the AN fitting is larger so you lose being able to run E36 factory PS lines. S54 alternator will work fine.
- AC
- Keeping E46, get E46 adapter connectors still need
- Weld
- Body
- Front bumper lip
- trim fasteners
- mesh

There’s a solid 5 build threads on this, def scan them and add to your list. You have about 10% covered haha but it’s all relatively easy, now. I can edit a swap DME for you. Also if you need an exhaust, can build that too!
Pitt,
It's been busy and I should of replied to you earlier. Yes, your build was one of the builds I researched and I even reached out to you before on some questions, so thanks again.
After some research, I do have a question for the group tracking this one:
I have a ZHP 5 speed now in the E36, I also have a a E46 ZHP driveshaft, do I
+ get the auto E36 drive shaft? not really feeling this route
+ is swapping out the E36 diff output flange on an option? this seems like the long way, since I do plan on swapping the diffs later on...or
+ swap out the diff from a E46 330i 3.38 that i have access to, figuring this route makes the most sense, will this fit the e36 chassis?
Also, since I have the S54/GS6-37, the linkage, any OEM options to center on the E36? Do I need to go with the M54 flywheel because of the pilot bearing clearance or am I reading this wrong?
Do you mean ZF 5 speed? I always thought the zhp came with 6 speed tranny’s.
If you are gonna use the s54/6speed, get a custom driveshaft that is the correct length. The auto will work but it’s a little short where the splines connect.
If you use the s54/ZF 5 speed, then it will be a direct fit
I have the ZF5 speed installed now, but I also have access to 3.38 from an auto E46 330I. If I use the 3.38, would it fit the E36 chassis? I'm thinking of using the ZHP drive shaft with the 3.38 and keep it moving.
No, the diff and driveshaft will not work in the e36. What diff do you have on the e36 now?
Which model e36 do you have?
I have a E36 328I ZF 5 speed.
How deep are your pockets lol,
With the ZF, you can re use everything for now, but you will eventually need a E36 M clutch
Will post more pics later.
How come I can't post high resolution pics? Also, anyone got the detents tool I can borrow?
Anybody know the drive shaft length needed? I will customize my e46 shaft I have now, I'm not able to put the car on a lift right now since s52 acting up on me. Any help appreciated.
3.38 on its way
Subscribed.
You can use the forum to host your pics, cant you?
I haven't figured out the forum posting pics yet. Got the 3.38, just need transmission carrier, slave cylinder, drive shaft, and some mother miscellaneous pieces including an oil cooler which has been on back order for a while.
Been busy working on other cars, plus its cold up north so...but still on it.
Yeah, forum won't let me add pic for some reason...so I have to host it elsewhere and the pic quality isn't so good

I would have looked for a 3.38 lsd from an auto e36m3.
The other parts...Yes 3.38 should go in this weekend with current S52.

Just a little update, I got the e36 325I clutch slave cylinder, e pedal, exhaust mid section, fuel pump, and fpr...By the way diff and angel eyes are in.
Notes to self:
I have a 1404mm driveshaft from e46
I have a 1492mm driveshaft in e36
I plan on shortening my e36 drive shaft.

Hey, reading up on the wiring that was already posted and the ETM posted on webphones is for a 2001 Z3M, the wiring is slightly different. I really want to follow along and verify the wiring. I realize the X6004 has the most connections to the chassis.
Does anyone have the E46 S54 ETM? Kindly send me a PM, looking to sort the wiring for the swap.
Thanks in advance.
There is no E46 M ETM, it’s a WDS. Google that and follow some links, there will be an active one somewhere.

x60004 will be just about the same and z3m etm is good for the swap
Pitt, I asked because the e-pedal Z3M wiring ETK is different than the wiring already posted on the board.
For example, pin out of x6004, forum says pin 14 goes to pin 3 of the e-pedal, but in the Z3M ETK, pin 14 goes to pin 6 in the pedal.
Thanks for the info and clarification, will look for WDS.
