Help ! 2008 535xi turbo failure burning excessive oil

    Hello All,

your insight is is truly valuable . I currently have an 08 535xi. I was notified by my local dealer a year ago that my turbo was failing however they stated I would be fine driving it. About 3 weeks ago my vehicle starting making whistling noise while accelerating so I took my car to the local dealer whom informed me that the turbos have completely failed . I have been adding an excessive amount of oil about 1 quart per week at about 300-400 miles . I added oil on Tuesday and literally the light just came back on. Is this normal when turbos fail ??

before I would add at about 1200 miles . My car has about 165k miles on it.

your help is appreciated also I've found someone to replace the turbos for $900 with a 6 month warranty. wondering if I should
Check to see if there is a bigger problem before spending extra money.

You are aware, $900 is likely just the labor to replace the turbos?

Ask whoever said that what the total parts and labor cost will be.

I expect the person is quoting you labor only.

$900 might also be the parts cost for a pair of rebuilt turbos. Add $900 labor.

He said its parts and labor .its a used part which is why he offered 6 months. The parts won't arrive until tomorrow or Thursday.

Is it normal to burn excessive oil with a failed turbo ?

Normal isn't the word I would use, but there is a turbo failure mode that does cause oil consumption.

$900 is fair for two used turbos installed but I would probably not risk the used turbos since I would not want to pay for another set or do the labor again. N54 is common from 07-10 are very limited after that (some “is” models), so used ones are likely old though some were replaced under warranty along the way.
