Hello guys, this is my first post on bimmerforums, and im looking for a quick answer who really knows their stuff. Im about to order a DME for my e38 740i m60b40, but it was from a 4.0 e32 and im not sure if it will fit and everything will work as it should. Since the cars use the same engine, will it fit the e38 m60b40? The code of the part is 0261200404 1703400 (heres the link if that helps) https://srotas24.lt/automobiliu-daly...233430882.html THANKS!!

Based on the part database...the BMW part number for the DME you posted (12 14 1 703 400) is retrospectively exchangeable with several DME's that were used on the models below (or click link): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partxref?q=12141427366
Take note of specific build date ranges...does your e38 fall within the build date listed?
- E34 w/build dates of 3/92-6/96
- E32 w/build dates of 3/91-4/94
- E38 w/build dates of 7/93-3/96
- E31 w/build dates of 12/92-2/96

My 1996 08 3.5 has been swapped to a 94' 4.0, but i guess it should fit since the engine is 94' right?
Your 1996 735i had an M62 engine - you have swapped in an M60 engine - and that isn't going to work as the control of the gearbox and communications to the IKE are different. Only one person has ever done this (M60 engine into an M62 chassis) - and it was a HUGE commitment - not to be recommended. It would be better to find an M62B44

Unless the older models are different it will need to be virginized to work with your EWS and keys. I don't think you can just drop it in and go.

Thanks for the answers guys, no choice but to try it now since the m60 is already in the car and only missing the DME.
It's not going to fit - different shape, different connector

Could you please send me an example or a part code of how its supposed to look to fit?
Why in the heck wasn't this bit of information in the FIRST post....ahead of the "my e38 740 m60b40"? Because that is not what you really have...you have a 735I with an Aug/96 build date that you've plucked a (not working yet) M60b40 engine into.
As mentioned above...the DME is not the only thing to consider...you have EWS, LCM, and ZKE coding a the least to consider. Misrepresentation of what you actually have and are starting with as a base leads to incorrect replies and info. The 8/96 build date puts you in EWS II territory...which means contending with a transmitter-receiver, EWS control module, and DME that are all coded with a specific ISN (individual serial nbr) that must match the other components as well as the key before the car will start.

Sorry if i mislead you guys, i am not a mechanic myself and not the one doing the swap, my mechanic just told to me to start with a new m60 DME, since even he doesnt know 100% how to get this thing working properly.
Although some one has done it, it would have been easier to chew an M62 block from a lump of aluminium. Really, it is much simpler to get the right engine in there!

Bought this engine with my last pennies, so another engine is not an option, at least for now sadly. Mechanic said hes going to try to program the EWS out completely from the m60 dme block, well see how that works out
Hey guys, ive bought a new DME from a 94' 4.0 e38 without EWS alltogether , and with this DME the car wont even crank. Any ideas on what i should do next? Im determined to get this working
