Strange (New) engine/exhaust sound boggle!

A few days ago I was on my way home from work when my battery light came on... I knew instantly that I had lost a beat but was only a block from a repair shop near home. I drove the car directly to the shop to discover my water pump had seized and snapped the belt. Since the car overheated briefly I had the thermostat replaced, the water pump, radiator hose and the both belts. The issue is that now my car sounds pretty much like a diesel when accelerating through the gears... The sounds appears to be coming from the drivers side middle of the vehicle. It sounds like there's an exhaust leak. I'm taking it in for service to see if I can get it figured out but wondering if anyone had any ideas, thanks in advance!

Follow-Up: After taking the vehicle to a local muffler shop they diagnosed the problem as the EGR valve and it appears that it was probably damaged when the shop was doing my cooling system refresh. Trying to convince the shop of cause and effect is proving difficult because they of course insist that it's a coincidence and not cause and effect... They have tentatively agreed to split the cost of the ERG repairs...

I've never heard of one needing to be replaced ever... I think they messed something up when they were repairing the cooling system as well!
