undercarriage rattle on 87 Euro 730i 5 speed - solved

I heard a metal rattle when I was driving home from the Vintage it sounded like a loose part on the exhaust system. When we put the car up on a lift to check it out we noticed that the metal cover that surrounds the flex disc has separated from the flex disc itself. The flex disc seems to be ok no cracks but the metal piece that surrounds the flex disc is loose and rattling around.

Has anyone experienced this before? I don't even know what this part is called.

new to me, but 5-speed are rare. What is the VIN, so that we can check more in detail? Maybe we check under E23 too, as yr car has some items from the E23 installed.

and the center mount looks like this https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...t/26121226723/

It is to be assumed the new universal joint fits into this metal cage and the metal cage is re-used http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=26_0247

Firstly thank all of you for your quick response to my question. I have been a member of the myE28.com since it was on Roadfly, same with Big Coupe. I did not think I would find the same type of camaraderie on another board until I got involved with this group.

I went back to my mechanics shop and we decided to remove the part and see if doing this has any effect on the driving of the car. If it does then I will have it replaced.

Just to finish this off. My mechanic removed the piece just as Cory suggested. I took the car for a VERY spirited drive yesterday with a local BMW group and the car ran great. No issues with the piece removed and no rattle. Fantastic. Thank you all for your help.
