Turbo diaper have you tried one?

    i have some questions

first has anyone tried the dei one? it's expensive at $177 but probably for the best.
i'm wonder if anyone used it on their holset because they have a big booty idk how fitment is.

Also, here are the temps i got idling for a bit after a commute.

    Turbine 490f
    Center section 360f
    Coils front to back 190 210 208 202 207 195 192
The hood i can't even touch for 1 seconds or it's burn time i assume over 200.
i've been running like this for a long time but these numbers have me concerned $$$

looks like the turbo heats them pretty good near the turbine.

You could get a sheet of 18ga stainless and it will reflect all the heat off your coils.

    Never tried a blanket myself.

i bought one from aliexpress to "try out" 10 bucks shipped. dont seem to last if you remove it often. if you plan on setting and forget it they are probably fine. springs are ok, overall shape isnt the best. but its 10 bucks and hasn't caught fire.

    How to turbo your car:
Step one. Install ecu and learn to tune and or have it tuned.
Step two. Install injectors and retune.
Step three. Install turbo parts and bits. get it running with out leaks. DO NOT DRIVE IT. Idling should be ok
    Step four. Retune car
    Step five enjoy

I have a DEI titanium blanket and it does a good job at blocking the heat from the turbine. I also put a piece of the stick on heat reflecting barrier on the hood just above the turbine. This is in an E30 and it seems to be doing ok. My coils also get hot as hell. I bought a thin sheet of titanium I may eventually get around to making a valve cover heat shield with. I'm running an OBD1 valve cover and OBD1 coils on an M52 in an E30 with a topmount

I have the wrap on my manifold. I can touch the manifold without dying after a hard drive. I can't hold my finger on it for too long but the fact it doesn't instantly burn me is amazing to me.

I personally wouldn't use it on a turbine housing unless I had a water cooled center section. DEI titanium wrap on the downpipe will help a ton.

Mine is watercooled, but that’s a good point. I also have the titanium wrap on my downpipe and it seems to be doing a great job as well.

i respect your perspective. have people thermoed the center section and saw unsafe heat with a blanket?

I’m sure someone has, but we know for a fact it holds more heat in (because science) and when you shut down your car it heats the oil sitting in the center section and could coke up the turbo. At least with water cooling the water is still flowing for a bit even after the car is shut off so it helps dissipate that trapped heat.

Do you think the retained heat in the turbine section conducting to the center section from having a blanket would be more than the radiant heat from the turbine to the center section without the blanket?

You bring up a good point. Nothing scientific to back it up, but my guess would be the blanket would cause the turbine housing to transfer more heat. Might be a toss up though.

My wife's Fiat 500 Abarth (turbo 1.4) has a "turbo timer" that circulates coolant through the turbo for a few minutes after the key is shut off. I always thought is was oil until I had the hood open one day just after shutdown and saw the coolant returning to the top of the overflow bottle. Thought that was pretty cool!

Even without an aux pump to circulate water, you still cool a CHRA down with water cooling after the engine is off via the thermo-syphon effect. Coolant will boil in the CHRA, escape upwards as gas, and pull fresh liquid coolant in.

It was very loud on the Garrett turbos I had, but much quieter on the aluminum CHRA BW EFR I had (probably because the EFR cooled off much easier being aluminum).

I guess I can do some temp testing with the IR thermometer when I get my blanket.
