I'd like to remove, or make removable at track, the door windows on my E36 coupe. Is there really a (mostly) waterproof solution?
It's hard for me to see how a plexiglass window, or a glass window in hangers, would seal at the top in a frameless window.
(The OEM electric windows in a coupe do this fancy thing, as the window gets to the top, the track/motor creates a significant push 'in' at the top of the window against the window seal.)
I know a ton of people have done this, but, waterproof?
My brother has plexiglass with a handle on the outside and a push/twist lock retainer on the top corner that locks it into place. The back side clip is welded onto a bracket that is mounted to his cage. Just to give you some starting thoughts....
That setup makes sense. Thanks.
I have the condorspeed shop front windows and I think they seal decently. I have them set up a little higher with the pins and bend the window at the top which holds it tight like the oem window would be after shutting the door.
At the bottom of the stock glass are aluminum brackets that I made T brackets with slots in them that the aluminum brackets would slide into. The T brackets were welded to the stock door bars. The fitment was perfect, no water leakage.
So I picture all the OEM sliding mechanisms removed. And the OEM aluminum brackets (at the bottom of the window) are fixed to your t brackets, and your T's are welded to the door?
Then, said OEM window is slipped into the door, and lowered into the OEM aluminum brackets?
OEM aluminum brackets are fixed to the glass and slide into the T brackets.

Ahhh. Ok, thanks for that link. That helps a lot.
And, one more question.
So the aluminum brackets stay attached to the window.
So how do you remove the window with the seals in place? (See pic)

It pulls right out. The upper door seal push the window against the lower, outside window seal. Water does not leak in at all.
Ahhhh, I assume the inner lower window seal is removed to make room for the brackets to slide in/out. But the outer lower seal is left in place, to seal.
Thanks!
Sweetness, thanks!! This is my project for the week.
