So I'm tempted to rebuild the surrounds on the door speakers instead of replacing them with monsoons. Anyone use the stock door woofers with aftermarket amp? I imagine I would set the cut off at about 60hz.
Are they any good?
I'm currently in the process of doing the monsoon upgrades all around four in the doors and 4 in the rear deck from what I have seen taking the speaker apart they just are not quality speakers and your much better off running to the junk yard and grabbing up some monsoons as the speaker quality far surpasses the stock BMW ones and its really easy to take off the outer plastic shell surrounding the speaker to install in your 740 make sure you grab the 4ohm speakers and not the two ohm tho.
I’ve alreDy got the monsoons. Guess I’m a little intimidated about hacking the speaker pod for correct figment. Post some pics of your process
it's really easy if u flip the monsoon over and trace the outline then use as dremel to notch out the parts of the speaker that dont fit in the housing I'll take good pics of my progress tomorrow I finished the rear deck yesterday
What fitting you use on your dremel? The cutting disc won’t fit.
You can use any type of power tool you have available to cut the plastic housing. Some have used reciprocating saw, I have used oscillating saw with good results (I've installed 4 monsoons in the rear speaker shelf).
I even toyed the idea of JBL speaks off Toyota. My wife's 2003 Highlander got JBLs and we have to turn down the bass all the way down, they kick so much!! (car is used to haul kids around).

New guy here ! I would fix the factory speakers first. I just re foamed the 4 5.25 subs in the package tray of my 95 740il. It cost $25 for a kit to do all 4 off ebay. They sound very tight and punchy until they get broke in, about 2 hours of decent volume. I saw the "monsoon upgrade" but they said the speakers don't have an air tight seal in the enclosure. The re foams sound pretty good and I'm no stranger to decent systems.
Clean the old foam off the cone and basket, glue the new surround on the topside of the cone. Let it sit overnight. Download a test tone app for your phone, hook your phone up to your home stereo. Set the tone for 50hz and hook up the wires to the speaker you are re foaming. Set at a low volume, now put the glue on the basket and press at 12 and 6, 9 and 3 , and so on until the foam is secured. The test tone will let you know if your off. If the speaker rattles then your not straight. I did 4 and it never rattled.
These factory speakers are not crap ! And the enclosure is designed for these speakers. Don't just rip them out and think aftermarket is better. GM and Ford speakers ARE crap with magnets the size of a quarter. LOL
I'm going to re foam the door speakers and add a 12" sub and 700 watts. It should be about just right.
Can anyone confirm if the monsoon speakers with fit all four doors on e38 with dsp?? I just ordered four NOS monsoon speakers on ebay($70 otd!!)
Because I know sharing the eBay link will pay it forward and net me the answer I’m looking for, here it is($15 each, lower prices the more you purchase, like $18 shipping or so)

I Just replaced the factory speakers with these from parts express. I cut off the mounting posts for the factory speakers and drilled four new holes. Done
