    Battery?

    '01 325Ci Vert

Key will sometimes work, other times not, other times will open the car then beep three times
Horn sounds like a 90 yr old lady trying to blow it
Convertible will occasionally hang up, other times work perfect

    Battery? Anything else maybe?

I would take a look at the fuses, for I have seen some soft fail. Under low or normal load will work just fine, but under a heavy load like opening the top not work. Next do check the battery for if it is 5 years or older, it would be suspect in my eyes.

As for the alarm horn, that too can be failing, for it should only beep once for locking and twice for unlocking. That is connected all to the GM, so if you are having problems with the central locking system, read this website: www.bmwgm5.com

Battery checked good, 12.4v engine off, 13.9v engine on.

    I'll check the fuses, thanks.

The key may need a new battery or may have battery leads cracked inside. I'll go down that rabbit hole after the fuses.

Another place to check is the engine ground on the passenger side of the motor. Make sure both ends are clean and tight.

If you think the key is going bad, check this guy out: www.bmwgm5.com

Lastly if you are having other electrical gremlins, the ignition switch can be the problem, worth looking into at your age of the car.

Battery voltages are low. The first reading should be at least 12.6VDC. The second reading should be in a he 14.VDC neighborhood. I’m betting your battery is shot. How old is it?

Not really as 12.4v is only 25% discharged, and the range for a good alternator is 13.5 to 14 volts. At full load I have seen a new alternator drop down to 13.5v, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Many auto electrical and/or battery sellers will do a load test on your battery for free. Call around to find one in your area. Wouldn't hurt/would be interesting to get two or more such opinions and compare them with us. I'm making no bets, but a load test ('specially since it's usually free) would be a great bit of ground zero diagnostic data, and I'd certainly go there first as long as the car will reliably start. If not, remove battery and take it there.
