So, I’m having a problem with my instrument cluster. The backlight of the screen flickers sometimes and then it doesn’t work at all other times. Also, for some reason the airbag light is flickering with the screen, even though when the cluster is properly working, the airbag light is not on. I’ve attached a video below of what the issue looks like. Does anyone know how to repair this or someone that can repair it?
Also, the clock in the video is constantly cycling through. That is a problem with the rubber stalk being jammed. I'd like to have that fixed too but the main issue is the non functioning display.
Here is the link to a video of what the issue looks like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lufa3ytmxk...Video.mp4?dl=0

Let’s do the free stuff first. Google “BMW E46 hidden OBC functions.” Test #9 will show you the voltage as seen by the engine computer (DME). Check and report back the voltage when the:
- ignition is in the run position without the engine running
- engine idling
- engine revving at 2000 rpm
Why do this test? These cars are rolling computers and wacky voltages cause wacky issues.
Next do test #2 to check the function of the gauge cluster. This “exercises” the gauges and all of the lights.
Next, head over to E46Fanatics and search for the procedures to pull the gauge cluster and to fix the clock setting shaft.
Alright!
With the key on run and the engine not running: 123-124
With the engine idling: 144-146
At 2 rpm: 146
As for the clock, I’m not worried about that currently. It’s been broken for more than two years and I want to get the cluster electronics fixed first.
As for the gauge cluster test, everything appears to work including the screen and all lights. But I still get the screen flickering and shutting off after driving a little while.
Then the cluster is likely ok. Are you having an other electrical/electronic issues?
I am not having any other electrical issues
I don’t have the electrical diagrams anymore as I sold my E46 last year. But, try this link. You’ll have to drill down. I’m suspecting that you’re loosing power to the gauge cluster. Could be an issue in the fuse panel. Fuses 10, 34 and 43 supply power to the cluster. Work from there towards the cluster.
