Hey guys,
It's been a long time since I last owned a BMW and I'm getting the bug again. I've been looking at a newer 7 since my new family needs space. I'm more attracted to the 740 due to better mpgs. Just wondering if I'll regret not getting the v8. I also understand the I6 turbo engine to be pretty bulletproof and easier on the transmission. I'm not interest in a long wheelbase car again, my last 740iL was amazing but quite large. M sport is also a must. While I'm a die hard manual guy I need a larger, comfortable car, and I figure at least with paddle shifters I can at least get some enjoyment out of driving.
Thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

From what I've heard, the 740 is plenty fast, so you'll still enjoy it quite a bit. +1 on the 740i

I’ve owned a 750iL for the past 6 years. While I love the power of the V8 twin turbo, it comes with its issues as well..constantly topping oil off, valve stem seals, etc.
If I were to do it again i would go 740 without question.

Good to know. Especially since i'll be buying one with higher miles. How well do the transmissions hold up? My last 7 and X5 always had me worried the trans was going to break at any moment due to known problems.

I just went through the same debate. I worked at a BMW dealer from 1997-2012 and I remember the V8 turbo having several issues (oil consumption and carbon buildup being what I remember most). I was in the market for a F02 and in the end went with a 2015 740Li. For the last several years I’ve been driving a Jaguar XJ8 which has much better acceleration than the 740. After a few weeks however I’m not missing the Jag.
How reliable is the generation compared to the E38 and the E65?
Somewhere in the middle? I would buy a clean well maintained decent mileage E38 without a doubt but E65 not so much.
Hey guys another question. Did all the 740s all come with power side and rear window shades? I'm shopping a few cars and can't tell which cars have them and which don't. Also did they all come with fold down rear seats?
Lastly, and I know this sounds crazy. Has anyone ever taken the transmission out and dropped in a 6 speed? I figure it's very do able because it's a simple automatic and the engine is the same one used in the 3 and 5 series, both of which offered a manual.
Thanks for all my silly questions.
