I have a 2008 X3 that lately has been very hard to start when engine is cold. If I hold the key in the crank position it will usually eventually start, but sometimes it takes 20-30 seconds and is not always smooth. Sometimes it doesn't start at all, but when I re-try and hold the key in the crank position, it will then start. Once it is running it is fine, runs normal and smooth. Plus I haven't had this start issue once it is warm. My indy tried many different things including changing relays, etc. He was not able to find any codes. No warning lights on dash once car starts...when it fails to start the Service Engine Soon, EML, battery and oil lights come on, but they all go off once I am able to get it started. Replaced all spark plugs about 3 months ago, and changed air filter last month. Any suggestions? I hate to spend $$$ to take it to the dealer.
... fuel pump?
... forty-three years of driving before I get behind the wheel of a BMW .... and I am thinking, "why did it take me so long?"
... and then after another 4 years I can't believe that I have two of them !!
ground straps - you'll see corrosion on the ground cables on the underside of the vehicle.

+1 fuel pump. I had this happen too, and I neglected to take action. I finally had to get a tow after I got stranded on the highway.
