Replaced valve Cover Gasket, now no crank no start but fuel pump runs constantly E90

I replaced valve cover gasket on wife's '06 325i. I found 2 broken valve cover bolts which I believe explain the oil leak onto the exhaust manifold. I have limited experience with BMW's but I thought I followed the on-line guides to replace the valve cover gasket OK. The only concern I had was with the valvetronic motor. Apparently I didn't turn it sufficiently to release all the tension when it was removed: it sprung back ~1/2" when the last bolt was removed. When I reinstalled it, I rotated the motor and it pulled into place, then I tightened up the bolts.

When I reconnect the battery to test the car, the fuel pump comes on with the engine off and no key in the ignition. When I put in the key and try to start the car, it does not crank. I'm totally confused. I don't know what I screwed up. I checked all the connections and they look correct and match the pictures of wiring found on-line. I couldn't find this problem reported in on-line forums. Any suggestions on where to start greatly appreciated. Other than smoke from the oil leak onto the exhaust manifold, the car was running with no error codes before I replaced the gasket.

It's an Actron PocketScan Plus (CP9410). It's an older basic scanner, but I have pulled emission codes off of this vehicle in the past.

You need a scanner that can read BMW codes.

Regardless of scanner type - if you could connect and now you can't, this may lead back to why your car is acting odd. Explore why you have lost comms to your DME... if other things aren't talking to it... your car will not do much.

If it ran fine before you worked on it go back and check your work, something must not be plugged in right
