    2008 BMW 328i Key question

So, my dog chewed up my only key fob, I do still have the key fob and have pulled out the key from it. I have several questions, first question is there a way to start the vehicle with the key only? Second question, if i buy a fob online could I insert the key into the slot and it would work, if not how would I go about getting a new key fob working without paying a ridiculous amount of money? Thanks

Buying a new key is just the first step. The key gas to be synchronized with the car’s electronics before it can start the car. The only place to get a real BMW key is at the dealer. Shop around as different dealers have different prices.

No, the key is only for when the battery dies and you need to access the car. The FOB holds all the other data that the car needs to start with. Now you can just order the FOB by itself: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=41_1639

And they can do it at the dealership. Now you will need proof of ownership of the car, and it normally takes 3-5 business days to get the key. If it is a good dealership, they will align the key with the car for free, otherwise they may charge you for doing so. Normally IIRC you have to have all the keys in your possession to do this.

This isnt the same as ordering a blank, right? I called and asked if they could program a blank and they said they couldn't. And to buy a new one from them and have it programmed is $325-$450

No, it isn't the same as there is a chip inside the FOB that is programmed to the EWS. There are a total of 10 pre programmed slots inside the EWS, so a blank will need special tools to get it to work.

Wow who said it would cost that much? From one of the forum sponsors: https://www.thebmwminipartstore.com/...&siteid=218365

another question, if i have the key in the fob and insert the fob into the the slot on my car (I do not have comfort access), every once in a while i can get the little key symbol with the line going through it to come up on my dash, does that change anything or no?

I think that means that the battery in the FOB is getting low.
