M73 Tuning - Where to Start?

Greetings! I used to own a 1997 750iL and would like to get ahold of a take-out M73 engine to tinker with. I'd like to tear one down and refresh it at a minimum, ideally make a bell housing adapter and run it on the engine dyno.

I've been poking around the web this morning but without much success. Is there a software package available to end users that will allow me to edit and update the engine calibration (fuel maps, spark, etc)?

I could also use any references/recommendation on engine info. Remember the old 1970s books "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy" and "How to HotRod Your Small Block Chevy"? That's what I want for the M73! Since I assume that doesn't exist, any links to useful info where I can learn what -would- be in there would be great. I do not have a workshop manual, should I? Which one?

Thanks very much for any info to get me started! Basically I'd like to build some expertise with a new motor and these are one of the nicest looking V12s cosmetically, so I'd like to learn more for swapping them, etc.

Primary issue is the M73 DMEs are virtually impossible to tune. I'm in the process of swapping an M73 into my E31, but I am running the M70 electronics as we can tune on those. From what I've read, the only real option is a separate engine management system and I've not found one that made sense for the M73. Others may have better info for you, but that's the extent of my knowledge.

I'd be interested in the details about running stand-alone management on the M73. One of my original thoughts when buying my 750 was that at some point I might scavenge the engine for some sort of project car when rest of the chassis starts to give out. Figured at that point it would only make sense to go stand-alone to make it easier to integrate with whatever other chassis.

I gave a complete M73 with 110K miles to BMP Design, they were going to use as a manikin for accessories. However BMP has now closed their doors tho, still doing performance tuning/maintenance work for locals in east TX.

AFAIK the only things you can do to 'tune' would be a DUDMD tune. Outside of that, if you're ready to spend some real money, you can go shopping at VAC. But that would most likely lead you down the path of completely different engine management solutions. The stock ECUs won't support a mod like that to run.

I'll be parting my 750 out soon, if you'd be interested in the motor let me know. I'm down in California tho.
