Manual 1994 325i gear with exclamation mark inside of it light

Hi there I have a Manual 1994 325i and there is a light on the dash that is a gear with a exclamation mark inside of it, I've read this means the trans is faulty but everyone also says there having problems getting there car into gear, and there cars are all automatic. My car doesn't have any problems with the transmission, shifts smoothly into every gear, and downshifts. Could it be a bad sensor? Or am I low on trans fluid?

Somewhere along the way, a previous owner swapped your instrument cluster with one from an automatic. You can remove the bulb from the back of the cluster and you're good to go.

Or the car used to be an automatic and was manual swapped. Either way the light means nothing. Remove it from the cluster.

That light is invalid for a manual transmission. It means there is an issue with the transmission controller or the transmission electronics, but your car has no transmission controller or electronics.
