Can I still run the engine w/no oil in the tranny?

Hi everyone. I learned a costly mistake over the weekend. I used a harbor freight torque wrench to tighten the transmission oil pan. I had tested the wrench several times earlier and to my surprise it worked fine. So after going through the procedure listed here http://www.e38.org/zf-5hp30-service.html, (even using the neat little trick of if a bolt strips use an 11mm box wrench over the bolt. I only had two strip. I used a hammer and gently tapped the box wrench over the bolt), I was at the point of tightening the pan to 15lbs. Well I kept waiting for the wrench to click and before I knew it, I heard a crack instead and there went the aluminum pan. I know (sigh)...it was a rookie mistake. I ordered a new pan this morning from pelican parts along with new fill and drain washers.

In the meantime, can I turn over the engine to keep the batteries from dying or will I screw of the tranny? Also since I clearly over tightened the pan, will I need a new gasket? (the one on there is new).

I wouldnt run the engine/tranny without oil, other than no lubrication it gets no cooling either. I'm sure you can cook it fast.
My best investment was a digital CDI wrench, they are so much better than the mechanical ones. Costly tho, approx $300.
Doubt the gasket is damaged by this tho.

It's great cause you can use it for really small torque like 8Nm valve cover but also going up to 25-27Nm like oil pan drain plug etc.
I only use a mechanical one above 27. Like my transmission drain plug is at 35Nm, not sure if same for 750.

I would say you can but why bother? your battering isn't going to die in a week. If you're that concerned just pull the negative cables or invest in a battery charger.

That battery should last more than a month if it's in good shape. Definitely won't die while waiting for a part. And also I agree with those above because the oil pump in the transmission will run while dry.
