Hello all,
New to this site. I have a a high mileage 1999 740i with premium sound (DSP), no navigation system. Radio is fantastic. I recently purchased a 2001 740IL with DSP and the nav system I have no use for. The 2001 has only 110k miles and runs well. It is now my daily driver. I was wondering if it would be possible to swap out the non-navigation premium sound system from the '99 (head unit, mid and amp in trunk) and install in the 2001, replacing that head unit and amp. Does anyone know if this is possible (from a compatibility standpoint)? If it's installed and is functional, would I see any benefits in sound quality assuming I didn't also switch the speakers?
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in
Hi,
You could do this but it would mean a LOT of work and minimal/marginal improvement in sound quality. So all the effort and faff and messing around won't be worth the minimal gain.
You'd need to remove the modules and loom from the 99 car, remove the loom and modules from the 2001 car and swap in the 99 car's loom. You then need to also put in all the speaker wiring for the DSP speakers, so all door cards off etc, also then to install the oem subwoofer box (not sure if that's also under the rear shelf like in E39's)
You'd then need to button up the 2001 car nicely, and then as per above, only have a little bit extra in terms of sound quality.
For that amount of work, you'd get much improved performance if you went for an aftermarket head unit, 5 channel amplifier and upgraded speakers all around along with a small 8/10 inch subwoofer playing through the ski hatch.
Cheers, Dennis!
Thanks for the feedback Dennis!
