Tire and brake review at the ridge

Well I got back to the Ridge motor sports park with my new tires and brake pads on Wednesday. I took off my Nitto Envo's and put on my Conti Extreme sport contacts. the Nitto's are on 20" wheels and the Conti's are on 18" wheels. I removed Hawk HPS pads and installed Cool Carbon. I was at the Ridge about a month ago with similar weather, cool and overcast.

The traction control has been off due to it interfering on the corner exits. The Nitto's were good right up until they let go. The Hawk pads would fade on about the third lap and squeak just as the car was stopping on the street. The Conti's were awesome! They were making lots of noise as I leaned on them but they never let go. You just listen to them and they would let you know how hard you were pushing them. The brake pads never faded. In fact I started pushing them harder and later because I kept slowing down early for the corners. With the Hawks I had to say my prayers a few times going into a corner. The cool carbon S/T pads are an upgrade so I expected some improvement. They have not made a single squeak on the street.

So for what it's worth that's my thoughts for this comparison. I will be eating lots of brakes and tires so there is likely more reviews coming.

Everyone at every event is impressed with how fast I can run my living room around the track and I love doing it. I have a video with some overlay at Pacific Raceway. The audio sucks so leave the volume off. As I work out the bugs with my BT ODB2 I'll have some engine overlay as well. Enjoy,

That was great to see! These cars roll around like a bucket of jelly, but they sure do have grip.

How do Cool Carbons feel compared to OEM, especially on the street? I don't give a rip about dust, but I'm always looking for something with more bite and a firmer pedal.

The Hawk HPS is comparable to OEM but will fade later. The Cool Carbon S/T are comparable to Hawk HPS 5.0. Not much when you first touch the pedal but after a second or two the heat comes up and they grip like crazy. On my last outing on the street I heard some squeaking.

Yeah it makes it more fun to share. There is supposed to be engine data from an OBD2 bluetooth. That was my first time using it at the track so I haven't sorted everything out. The file transfer/ overlay process is a bit clunky. When I went to the Ridge the phone was so full of video and data it wouldn't even work. I think I have it sorted out now. If I don't ship out I'm going to an autocross event on Saturday. I need to attend cheaper events.

Harry's lap timer. You can use external sensors as well as the OBD2 and external cameras.

Just an idea, next time have the cam recorder attached to the rear window facing forward. That might really bring out the living room racing experience. "A 7 series owner doesnt race his own car, he sits in the luxurious back seat while a driver drives him around the track"

That sounds like a great idea. Then you will be able to see me trying to keep the limo on the track?
