I have a bearing type noise which is loudest when no load then greatly diminished or absent on acceleration. Just had driveshaft out, new guibo, cleaned and repacked CV joint and thought a tiny bit of play in center bearing was ok. Had only driven car once for 6 miles when purchased then disassembled but did not notice a bearing noise at that time. I put car on jack stands, rotated tires by hand, placed car in gear and ran up to about 25mph but all is silent. I am guessing that the center bearing is the culprit and jacking car up takes all load off of it and quiets it down. Before I disassemble all of this again I thought I would ask the group your opinion. If it is the center bearing can I trust one of the aftermarket brands for replacement? Thank you!
I should have stated that I thought I preloaded bearing when first assembled then I went back in and increased the preload. Gut says the sound was slightly diminished but not enough to make me confident that I actually found the problem.
Did you pre-load the centre bearing? This is for E38, but 840ci is just the same:
