1998 740iL, Arctic Silver with gray interior
I bought this car in in 2012, it was a mess, but I put a lot of time and money into it (lots of money) and had a great machine. The mileage timeline....
Purchased with 136,000 miles
Replaced engine at 138,000 miles due to a chain rebuild gone bad.
Rebuilt trans in my garage at 155,000 miles
Replaced both head gaskets at 173,000 miles
Lots of cosmetic upgrades and mods to make this a pleasant ride, also complete rebuild of front suspension.
At 211,000 miles, while driving up a long hill, the #8 cylinder blew an exhaust valve. I pulled the head, had the machine shop check it and replace the valve, and all looked good. Put it back together, and within a few minutes the coolant was bubbling over and a metallic tapping was present. I wondered if the cats were clogged, so I got some from Purple that were still good. Even replaced the head gasket a second time to make sure it was done right. But, the same results. The engine block apparently cracked during the valve failure.
The old girl is a goner. I'm looking for a replacement e38, most likely an '01 Sport if I can find a good one.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years that has helped me solve issues and keep her running. All the old timers on this forum are well aware of this cars history and each one of them has kept her running.
BUT, its time for a part out. You can all PM me for any parts your are looking for. I will let you know prices and shipping. I travel quite a bit as an airline pilot so I may not be able to send out stuff right away, but I'll let you know about timing.
I will not sell the MPars. It has a CD43 radio with CD, for those that want to replace their tape deck, its plug and play.

How much for the black leather dashboard?
At this point its not for sale. If I get a Sport with a black interior Ill swap it. Yes, this is rare from a 750iL. If I do sell it you'll have first dibs. I do have the leather B pillars from the 750iL in gray with black upper leather trim.
For everyone, please PM me for pricing and details, I think we're not supposed to do public part outs on the forum (I'm sure the Mayor will chime in)

I would suggest you not to part out your E38 for now until you will find a replacement. Then you could just swap over some bits from current to new E38 that she does not have and then sell the rest Saying so, because if you have some interesting toys in your E38 it is better to keep them rather than go hunting online again.
Really sorry to hear this Kouks, you put a Herculean effort into your car....

S62 swap! I know there are some guys on here to help out? The car you have with the history you know is always the best car. I know mine will blow some day especially because I take it to the track. I plan on swapping it to an M5 power plant. My wifes 525 will get the same treatment. Drive it until the wheels fall off and then bolt them back on and drive it some more.

Trust me, I’ve thought about dropping in another motor, or maybe just getting another block, but there are other things that are slowly going. The roof paint has failed and trunk is going that way too, front shocks are going, drag struts are going, front seats need replacing, and a few other small things that will require more cash. So I decided to let go.

Way to ruin my morning kouks!
That transmission is your baby!
Really sad to see this is the case though. As Tim said, massive effort thus far! At least you're still in the market for an e38. You had damn well better get another SR71 sig pic!
Carry on. So long as no one complains, I've been letting these go. Admin relaxed the Panjo crap awhile back. So long as the forum doesn't turn into folks using it to make a living parting out cars, like it once was, I have no issue with communicating here on a situation like this.
It's hard to let go. Kind of like a family pet. A trusted companion. But that said it's just a car and there's plenty more like it. Holding on the part out until its replacement comes along may not be a bad thought. You never know what you'll need. But who wants a jalopy hanging out in the driveway.
Should be a lot of nice ones out on the left coast. Good luck with it.
Sorry to see it at that stage. I've enjoyed your comments and "history" since catching the BMW 740 bug a few months ago. I have a 2001 740iL with 103,00 miles and looks great and ran great until I decided to "change a lot of parts" since it has just turned 100,000 miles. Since then, I have been chasing a p1159 and p1161 error (with service light coming on) for the last few months. Still runs great but I'm not driving it until I figure out the problem. Tried a great deal of the suggestions from this site. Still looking and intrigued! Hope to see you back with your new purchase (challenge).
Sorry Kouks you have been one of the most knowledgable sources here. Hope you jump right back in with a nice sport there's some good deals on Craigslist for a guy like you. I'll be anxious to see your New car !!!!

Oh man, what an ordeal! Cant believe the block is cracked! Good luck with part out!
Well, there might be life left in her. Rumors are my youngest daughter may want the car. She’s only 15, but that gives me over a year to maybe find a lower mileage engine or just a block and go from there. I’ve done this before. On the e34 forum I’ve rebuilt my 95 525 for my second daughter, and that thing had a severely overheated engine (my first daughter did that). That car has been on the road now for over a year trouble free. We’ll see. For now it’s still a junker.
My house is starting to look like I’m a good ol boy from Alabama, 5 old Bimmers, one that can’t run, and a Suburban.

Too bad you aren't closer. Getting ready to dump my old '96 DD. PO overheated the car at 167k and had dealer install new engine. Has about 80k on it I believe. My sons been driving it on and off the last couple of years and it's been sitting outside. Smoothness on INPA really good on all cylinders. Damage to front bumper from blown tire. Normal leaks in the engine, worn drivers seat and such. Even have and extra transmission from one of the part outs I did. All for $500. I am going to throw in an Icebox for a few hundred more.

I just know whoever buys it is going to want to fix the small stuff so selling it cheap. Putting it on a KC BMW page later today or tmro. Also, the Icebox is the diagnostic laptop Iceman put together, not an actual icebox for the car. Enough of that though. Don't want to thread jack any further.
M60 was '95. '96-'98 has the same engine. Car is still in decent shape and could be a DD for someone. Just ready to get it out of my driveway. No room at the new house and son got another car.
Sounds like it comes in it's own shipping container and it's self propelled. Just fly in and drive it back. Can anyone say road trip.
Well, its official, my youngest daughter wants the car if I can get it running (oh, paleeeease). PM'd the Mayor so this may be a good deal.
For those of you who PMed me for parts, un-regard the Part Out.
There's a reason this forum exists.

Glad to hear it man, cars like that deserve a second or in this car a third chance, as after all the work you've put into it. Glad your looking to get another 38 and sticking around for a bit.

IIRC the 96 and the 98 have the exact same M62 but had small differences with things like the fuel rail and the pressure regulator depending on the build date... One thing that comes to mind is just the FPR being attached to the fuel rail on the 96 and the 98 had it tucked under the car on the passenger side. You could just swap you fuel rail though so no biggie...
