How to take of the steering wheel?

How do you take off the steering wheel of a 1983 BMW 320i?

Pop the roundel out of the middle, grab a 22 mm socket with an extension and lefty loosey. Turn the ignition to position 1 and voila!

if this is the first time it's coming off it's going to take some grunt to break loose. do not rely on the steering column lock to hold the wheel stationary (I'm sure that's why Bonsai said to turn ignition to position 1). have a friend sit in the driver seat holding the wheel or if you are strong enough hold it yourself when loosening the nut.

I've taken my wheel off using the ignition lock as the "helping friend to hold it" before. Probably just putting unneeded stress on it and its going to break one day.

    Cool

I just pull on mine easy and I mark the splines with white out before removing so the steering wheel goes back in the same way it came out, other wise the steering wheel orientation will not be straight when driving straight down the road.
