1995 540i w/sport mirrors - mirror repositioning shifting from reverse to drive

Hello and thank you for reading,
I have a 1995 540i MSport with the sport mirrors. When you put the car in reverse the passenger side mirror tilts down so you can see the curb, when you shift into a forward gear the mirror should return to the original position which is not happening. I am able to readjust the mirror from the controls on the driver side door. Any ideas on what is causing this?

I'd guess the potentiometer responsible for reporting that mirror's vertical position has failed, perhaps just a connection.
If you switch the L/R switch for adjustment to the other position the mirror won't dip at all.
