2001 540i/6 with 180k miles
Noise usually heard in gears accelerating and decelerating. On stock suspension as far as I know.
What are some things to look at?
Video clip below. Not the best upload but noise can be heard thru out the clip.
I would check your CSB, as that will make the driveshaft bang around in a metallic way when it goes bad.

^Thanks. Will have to replace anyways if the I have to remove the drive shaft.
I found a vid that makes the exact noise
More than likely its the drive shaft cv joint... I will have to get car up on jacks once I get a day off
Sometimes you can save the CV joint by removing the driveshaft and re-packing it with grease, but if the driveshaft is still original at 180k miles it might be worth it to just get a remanufactured driveshaft with a fresh guibo, CSB, and CV joint, so everything is replaced in one go. That's what I did with my 540it, and I've had 20k trouble-free miles since, and that includes drag racing and a whole lot of burnouts.

It's the CV. Friend had the exact same sound and issue on his M5 after 150k mi (IIRC) in Ohio weather.

Diehard E39 driver.
I'd rather die or take a walk before driving an E60 or any BMW made after Y2K.
